Honor orchestras perform at University of Redlands
Approximately 80 middle and high school students from throughout San Bernardino County performed in the 2022 county honor orchestras concert March 5 in the University of Redlands Memorial Chapel.
Since 1986, San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools has collaborated with the San Bernardino County Music Educators Association to host the honor orchestras concert for students involved in music education programs throughout the county, according to a news release.
More than 30 students from a dozen area middle schools took the stage first, performing an arrangement of “Alborada” from “Capriccio Espagnol” by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
Adelle Glass, an elementary instrumental music teacher in the Redlands Unified School District, conducted the middle school honor orchestra.
Following the middle school performance, the high school honor orchestra opened with the first movement of “Palladio” by Karl Jenkins.
Todd Montemayor conducted the 50 students in the high school orchestra, who represented 14 San Bernardino County high schools.
Montemayor is an instrumental music teacher at Del Vallejo Middle School in San Bernardino and is the music director and conductor of the Redlands
Youth Symphony.
The two orchestras, made up of violinists, violists, cellists and bassists, played four pieces each.
The University of Redlands and the university’s School of
Music have supported the county honor orchestra and honor band performances for many years, providing Memorial Chapel for the concerts and university music students for logistical support.
