City's annual Million Mothers March set for Saturday

- — Javier Rojas

Mothers, their families and other community members are expected take part in the 16th Million Mothers March at Ganesha Park in Pomona on Saturday.

Organized by the Pomona-based Kennedy Austin Foundation, a nonprofit that works with parents, primarily women, who have lost a child in the tri-city area of Pomona, Claremont and La Verne, the event allows participants to reflect on loved ones lost to violence and other causes of death.

“We hope to see the community uplifted and remember those who aren’t with us today,” said Ethel Gardner, the foundation’s founder and CEO. “This is about going from tragedy to hopefully, real change.”

The event will feature a march around the park and a balloon release in remembrance of loved ones lost. There will also be numerous booths with information on services and programs offered by local organizations and nonprofits.

Speakers include various community leaders including Pomona Mayor Tim Sandoval and Thomas D. Allison, who is running for judge of the L.A. County Superior Court.

Check-in for the half-mile walk begins at 8 a.m. The walk will begin promptly at 9 a.m. Ganesha Park is located at 1575 N. White Ave.
