3 Claremont youth orchestras set to perform in 2 concerts
Three young musicians orchestras will present two concerts Sunday in Claremont.
The Claremont Young Musicians Orchestra, conducted by Jorge Luis Uzcategui, will perform at 7 p.m. in Bridges Hall of Music on the Pomona College campus, 150 E. Fourth St., Claremont.
The program will include the overture to “La forza del destino” by Giuseppe Verdi, Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 2 and “Capriccio Espagnol” by Nikolai RimskyKorsakov. Soloist for the concert is Charmaine Lee, the Claremont Young Musicians Orchestra 2020 concerto competition winner, performing “Zigeunerweisen” by Pablo de Sarasate.
Before the evening concert, the Claremont Young Musicians Orchestra’s Intermezzo Orchestra, conducted by Greg Samuel, will give a 2 p.m. concert, also in Bridges Hall of Music. That program features “Fiddle Faddle” by Leroy Anderson, “Dance of the Comedians” by Bedrich Smetana, “Peer Gynt Suite No. 1” by Edvard Grieg and “Pomp and Circumstance” Edward Elgar.
The 2 p.m. program also includes a performance by the newly formed Overture String Orchestra, conducted by Wendy Waggener, according to a news release.
Admission to both concerts is free. Tickets will be given out beginning at 6:15 p.m. for the 7 p.m. concert and at 1:15 p.m. for the 2 p.m. concert. Proof of COVIC-19 vaccination proof or a test taken within 48 hours and masks are required to receive a ticket and enter the hall, according to the news release.
The Claremont Young Musicians Orchestra has made numerous concert tours in Europe and has been presented twice by the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall in its “Sounds About Town” series and as an L.A. Philharmonic “premiere youth orchestra.”
The Claremont Young Musicians Orchestra continued rehearsing during the past two years through Zoom rehearsals in 2020-21 with 50 professional musicians working with the members of the Claremont Young Musicians Orchestra and the Intermezzo Orchestra. In-person rehearsals began this season following the many changing COVID-19 protocols.
