Fontana police shoot man they say fired at officer

Fontana police officers shot a man after he allegedly opened fire during a pursuit Friday night.

Officers were called to a gas station in the 11000 block of Sierra Avenue around 10:20 p.m. for a reported shooting, police said. The alleged shooter last was seen running into the neighborho­od south of Jurupa and east of Sierra avenues, and a perimeter was establishe­d while police combed the area.

About an hour later, an officer saw a suspect that matched the shooter’s descriptio­n take off running south of the neighborho­od onto Sierra Avenue and ordered the person to stop.

The suspect fired multiple shots at the officer, who returned fire and struck the man in his hand, police said. Paul Valenzuela, 37, of Riverside was arrested and taken to a hospital.

Valenzuela was found to be on parole for drug possession and is a documented gang member, according to police.

No residents or officers were injured in the shooting.

The shooting is being reviewed by the San Ber- nardino County Sheriff’s Department.
