A Temecula man is in jail on $1 million bail after deputies said he stabbed another man multiple times and left him for dead following a road rage incident near the city’s Old Town area in broad daylight Saturday.

The victim and the suspect, Rigoberto ReyesReyes, 43, were both driving when they got into some kind of altercation in the 28400 block of Old Town Front Street, near the northwest gate to Old Town Temecula, just before 12:44 p.m., Riverside County Sheriff’s Department officials said.

Both men got out of their cars. That’s when investigators say Reyes-Reyes stabbed the victim, then fled. When deputies got there, they found the 35-year-old victim alive but lying on a sidewalk with stab wounds.

In a statement, sheriff’s officials said the deputies got Reyes-Reyes’ license plate number and learned the direction that he drove away.

It’s not clear how they got the information. A detective would not say whether there were witnesses around who saw the alleged stabbing, or if the victim gave them the number. But they used it to find Reyes-Reyes about a half-mile south in the 42200 block of Main Street, arresting him at 1:05 p.m., according to jail records.

Reyes-Reyes was booked at the Cois M. Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta on suspicion of attempted murder. He has not been charged yet. But he is expected to appear in court on Wednesday at 8 a.m.

The victim was taken to a hospital and was still recovering Sunday. Officials did not describe the severity of his stab wounds. Nor did they say what the road rage argument was about.
