Police seized two guns and 30 spent bullet casings from a Murrieta residence following a five-hour Christmas Day standoff after a distraught man allegedly shot at several houses before surrendering to authorities.

David Carr, 48, surrendered to police about 1:30 p.m. and was booked into the Cois M. Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta, where he was being held

Monday in lieu of $1 million bail and facing felony charges of assault with a semiautomatic weapon and shooting at an inhabited dwelling, according to a Murrieta Police Department news release.

No injuries were reported in the incident, which began about 8 a.m. Sunday when police received several 911 calls from residents reporting shots fired in the area of Calle San Clemente and Calle San Vicente. A resident told a videographer for RVCNEWS.TV that a male had been randomly shooting at homes.

Police responded to the Las Brisas neighborhood and determined the shots had come from Carr’s residence, in the 24000 block of Calle San Vicente. Carr’s girlfriend, who police said left the house earlier, told police Carr was experiencing a mental health crisis and that there were two guns in the house, according to the news release.

Officers set up a perimeter and called in a SWAT team. After several hours of discussion between Carr and police, Carr exited the residence and surrendered. He was arrested at 1:38 p.m., according to Riverside County Sheriff’s Department booking logs.

During a search of Carr’s residence, police seized a semi-automatic rifle, a semi-automatic handgun and the 30 spent bullet casings, police said.

Anyone with information regarding the investigation was asked to contact Murrieta Police Detective Jason Calvert at 951-461-6362.
