Nonprofit provides new shoes for students

- From staff reports

Shoes That Fit, a Claremontbased nonprofit, recently provided new athletic shoes to more than 600 students at Bing Wong Elementary School in San Bernardino.

The shoe giveaway at Bing Wong Elementary was made possible by donations from powdered milk beverage brand Nestle NIDO and from Stater Bros. Charities, the charitable arm of Stater Bros. Markets, according to a news release.

In the Oct. 26 distribution, Shoes That Fit provided athletic shoes for the entire student body of Bing Wong Elementary School, including preschoolers, according to a news release.

“Shoes are intrinsically important to kids. Too many low-income families are forced to choose rent and food over shoes, leaving children wearing shoes that hurt, embarrass them, cause them to miss out on physical activities and sometimes miss school altogether,” Amy Fass, chief executive officer and executive director of Shoes That Fit, said in the news release.

“New shoes make a basic and lasting impact. We are so grateful to Stater Bros. Charities and Nestle NIDO for this generous donation that will provide a basic need and make a lasting impact on the lives of these kids,” Fass said.

Shoes That Fit, which has been named a California Nonprofit of the Year, delivered new athletic shoes to approximately 164,000 children in more than 1,800 schools across all 50 states last year, according to the news release. For information, go to shoesthatfit.org.

Stater Bros. Charities, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization, has invested more than $38 million in local organizations and causes that benefit hunger relief, children’s well-being, education, health, veterans and active service members and pet well-being since 2008, according to the news release. Funds are raised throughout the year from customers, suppliers and members of the Stater Bros. Markets team.
