Sunnyvale students go back to class part time
All 25 campuses in the Cupertino Union School District reopened on April 5 for hybrid instruction, including Nimitz and Stocklmeir elementary schools and Cupertino Middle School, all located in Sunnyvale.
Approximately half of all students in the district chose to return in person, and the other half will remain in distance learning for this school year. The numbers of hybrid and distance learning students vary on each school campus.
Hybrid students will initially be on campus two days a week. Elementary students will transition to four days a week starting April 26, with middle school students following suit on May 3.
In the fall, the district expects students to return to regular classroom instruction.
Schools are required to adhere to the California Department of Public Health’s COVID-19 and Reopening In-Person Instruction Framework. Modifications for campus instruction include implementing distancing inside and outside the classroom, ensuring sufficient ventilation, promoting health hygiene, cleaning and disinfecting, self-screening for symptoms and exposure, and instituting measures to be taken in the case of a confirmed or suspected case of COVID-19.
“Cupertino Union School District students, teachers and families are taking a big step forward on April 5 with our return to campus, and we will remain vigilant in providing a safe learning environment for our learners and staff,” Board President Jerry Liu said in a statement. “There is still much work ahead of us, but this return marks a significant milestone on the path back to our regular instructional schedule this August. “

Parcel tax election
Voters in the Cupertino Union School District are being asked to raise the district’s parcel tax by $148 a year. Mail-in ballots for the special election started going out to the district’s 77,739 registered voters on April 5; deadline to return ballots is May 4 at 8 p.m.
If the measure passes, the district’s annual parcel tax will increase from $250 to $398. The total expected annual revenue from this measure, which includes a waiver option for seniors, is estimated at $14 million per year for eight years.
The election will be conducted entirely by mail. The last day to request a replacement vote-bymail ballot is April 27.
In addition to mailing them in, ballots can be returned to the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters’ Office, 1555 Berger Drive, Bldg 1, San Jose, or at official drop boxes at nine locations including the Sunnyvale Library. 665 W. Olive Ave.
