A theme that seems to run through all of her work, whether it be a painting or a soulful cover of an old Betty Carter song, is one of catharsis and healing. This Taos broadcast institution follows an “adult alternative format,” that includes everything from honky-tonk to the Foo Fighters. Music programming is flexible at KTAOS and they diligently listen to the pulse of the listener. 123 ABC MESA ROAD, EL PRADO • (575) 758-1900 • TAOSMESABREWING.COM BIGSWINGTHEORY@GMAIL.COM • THEBIGSWINGTHEORY.COM We love live music and interactive events in Taos. On the way to the Gorge Bridge, out in mesa land, is our favorite place to see local and national performers who grace the indoor and two outdoor stages — including an amphitheater — with plenty of room to shake, rattle and roll most nights of the week. A converted airplane hangar houses the indoor stage fitted with “acoustic purity.” Add to the experience great food and excellent handcrafted, in-house brewed beers — cheers to a fun night out. In a past issue, Mac described his DJ style and mission: “The individualism of radio stations is pretty rare these days. I took a [cross-country drive] a few years ago. I was like, ‘This station sounds just like that station.’ ... When I’m driving, I seek out these tiny individual stations, and I want to hear the voice of that town. ... I’m going to be as local and personal and as informational in this town as I can be.” 123 ABC MESA ROAD • (575) 758-1900 • TAOSMESABREWING.COM Andrew Gonzales BestofTaos It stands to reason that the Best Live Music Venue has the best dance space — and in this case, it’s more than one space. Entertainment writer Laura Bulkin penned for publication: “Stadler has been a consistent shining light of the Taos music scene, whether solo or with his band The Colliders, at parties, barn dances, benefits or his always-mobbed Wednesday nights at Sabroso Restaurant and Bar in Arroyo Seco.” Amen to that. His popularity has never wavered. Stadler was named Best Rock Artist in the first Best of Taos poll in 1999 and has continued to rack up entertainment honors ever since. It may not be the largest place to play games of chance in the state and certainly has proximity on its side, but the quaint, non-smoking, Taos Mountain Casino is where blackjack players, bingo lovers and slot fans around here head to most often. The casino runs an array of promotions throughout the year, with thousands of dollars given away weekly. The Bison Rewards Card is the direct avenue to winning at Taos Mountain Casino, allowing players to accumulate points that lead to giveaways and prizes. Hearne is pretty much a household name not only in Taos, but just about the entire Southwest. A consistent winner of awards over the years, Hearne’s brand of “Southwestern Americana” can be heard woven through songs he’s written for the likes of Jerry Jeff Walker and others. He’s also the chief promoter of his annual, three-day Big Barn Dance Music Festival (Sept. 5-7, Kit Carson Park). This year marks the festival’s 17th season.
