After nearly 40 years making students’ pottery dreams come true, in 2003, moved to Taos, built their own house and a wood-fired kiln – which JoAnne DeKeuster, a hand-building ceramist, says was a total game-changer for their artistic process.

“In our wood-firing in Flagstaff and Eastern Arizona College we always had big groups for firing, but that was always to perfect students’ work. It’s exhausting if you do it right. Moving to Taos was the first time we could just focus all our time and energy on our own art.” A wheel-throwing clay artist, Kevin DeKeuster says their whole process is to keep their work unique. “This process is so involved and always growing – the wood ash changes the work. I always try to keep my pieces loose, spontaneous and flowing.”

Now a fully “green” operation utilizing 52 solar panels to electrify the clay process prior to the final wood-firing, they are gratified to at last have their own studio-gallery and kiln after 35 years.

“Our bottom line is that we want to create totally one-of-a-kind pieces that make people fall in love with our work.”
