The Taos County Sheriff’s Office is still searching for a suspect in the fatal shooting of a 47-year-old man Thursday (Oct. 25) near the Talpa Community Center.

Undersheriff Steve Miera said Julian Maestas of Talpa was discovered with a single bullet wound to his abdomen on Archuleta Road.

First responders found a woman in the area attempting to help the man, Miera said.

Taos County Emergency Services Chief Chris Medina said medics rushed Maestas to Holy Cross Hospital, where he died shortly after his arrival.

Later that night, deputies blocked the roadway as they continued their investigation.

Crime scene markers could be seen beyond two patrol units stationed at the southern entrance to the roadway, near what appeared to be articles of clothing.

Miera said, “Residents in the immediate area have been ruled out as to any involvement in this incident.”

As of press time Wednesday (Oct. 31), Miera added that Detective Marvin Armijo is “actively following any leads and has made this a priority case.”
