The Land of Enchantment has more women-owned businesses than any other state in the nation, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau analyzed by telecommunications provider, Frontier Business.

A total of 51.7 percent of New Mexico businesses are owned by women, according to the analysis. The next closest in terms of women-owned businesses are Idaho (50.8), Washington (50.3), Wyoming (50.1) and Oregon (50).

Data was based on the 2012 survey of business owners, which was the most recently available survey from the Census Bureau. Frontier Business looked at both “female-owned” and “equally male-/female-owned” business by state.

Overall, the United States has had a 114 percent increase in businesses owned by women in the past 20 years, according to the group.
