Local News Public comment sought on Taos Canyon forest project
Sandwiched between Taos Pueblo and U.S 64 in the narrow Taos Canyon is a swath of dense forest. Carson National Forest managers are proposing a couple of ways to reduce the fire risks on 9,709 acres of the land and are seeking public comment on the so-called Pueblo Ridge Restoration Project.
Public comments on the project are due Monday (June 17) to the forest supervisor. Comments must address the specific project and have supporting reasons for any concerns.
The Carson issued a preliminary environmental assessment proposing the restoration project. The aim is to restore the forest to its historic ability to withstand more frequent small wildfires, reduce the risk of a major catastrophic wildfire and improve wildlife habitat. The project would also make firewood and vigas available to local communities, according to the Forest Service.
The two alternatives for the project involve prescribed burning and cutting some trees and vegetation. The first alternative would require an amendment to the Carson’s management plan; the second does not.
A hard copy of the project is available at the Camino Real district or find it online at .
When commenting, include Pueblo Ridge Restoration Project in the subject line of the email or letter.
