Animal shelter hosts open house, festival

Tours, Frito pies, live music on tap for visitors

Stray Hearts Animal Shelter (Humane Society of Taos) is hosting an Open House and Festival of Animals from noon to 3 p.m., Saturday (June 29) at 1200 St. Francis Drive off of Salazar Road. The shelter it debuting a “multilingu­al, multicultu­ral outreach and education program, designed to inform and engage all segments of the Taos County community,” according to a press release.

The shelter has translated all office forms and informatio­n into Spanish and the nonprofit’s website also has informatio­n in Spanish. In addition, “Stray Hearts has reached an agreement with Taos Pueblo to manage its stray animals in the same way as it currently supports the town of Taos and Taos County,” according to the shelter’s statement.

“We hope that everyone in Taos County will join us for free Frito pies, an exhibit of all-natural dog food and tours of the shelter,” according to the release. “Kids will be able to participat­e in an art project that will contribute to decorating our cattery. During the afternoon, we will be treated to performanc­es by the noted New Mexico musician Chris Arellano and his band.”

Visitors can see the dogs and cats available for adoption, and learn about proper pet care and all applicable local ordinances. Animal Control officers will be present to explain the laws such as the requiremen­t for pet owners to license their animals, spay or neuter them and vaccinate them.
