Figurative works by America Martin

This week, 203 Fine Art, at 1335 Gusdorf Road, is highlighting some figurative works by artist America Martin, an LA-born artist with Colombian roots who has spent a lot of time in the area. Martin refers to herself as a painting anthropologist, as her primary subject is the human form. These pieces showcase Martin’s unique and exuberant approach to the figure, while delicate colors lend a sense of refinement. See the full inventory on Martin’s artist page or go to 203fineart.com or call (575) 751-1262.

Cultural spots in New Mexico – virtually

The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs museums, historic sites and cultural institutions continue to operate virtually during this time of social distancing. Some recent highlights: The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture this past week on Facebook shared a Vogue. com article titled “15 Indigenous Designers on What Sustainable Fashion Is Missing,” about how Indigenous artists in North America today approach the creative process with a mutual respect for nature and the world that they live in. And a virtual exhibit “Alexander Girard: A Designer’s Universe” is now available on the Museum of International Folk Art website. The tour opens a door to textile artist Girard’s creative universe and shows his close relationships with contemporaries such as Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, Andy Warhol and Rudi Gernreich. For the array of cultural richness available, visit media.newmexicoculture.org.

Textile designer Alexander Girard (1907-1993) was a pivotal figure in the history of the Museum of International Folk Art, Santa Fe, donating more than 100,000 objects from his and his wife Susan’s folk art collection, and in 1981 creating the museum’s longterm exhibition ‘Multiple Visions.’ Girard’s playful designs attest to a passion for colors, ornamentation and inspirations from folk art.
