Cañada Fire 100 percent contained

The Cañada Fire, which burned around 25 acres of forest just across Taos County’s western line, has been 100 percent contained, according to an update from the Carson National Forest.

Javonne Goodman said in a final update issued Thursday evening (June 11) that resources deployed to fight the fire will gradually be reduced now that the blaze has been contained, which means that firefighters have cut a perimeter of noncombustible material around the fire to keep it from spreading.

The fire was identified on Monday (June 8) 9 miles north of El Rito and 11 miles east of Canjilon in Río Arriba County. High winds blew smoke into Taos as around 29 fire personnel, including the Lolo Hotshots, arrived to fight the fire. Three engines and a helicopter were also deployed to help contain the fire, which was started by a lightning strike, the Forest Service reported.

Goodman said fire crews will continue to monitor the fire.

Fire restrictions remain in place, prohibiting igniting, building, maintaining, attending or using a fire.
