Jennifer Guthrie Ryan Cserhat

Age 87, of Taos, New Mexico, passed away May 27, 2020, of natural causes. Born in Stratford-Upon-Avon, she was of both the Guthrie Clan of Scotland, and the House of the Low. At the age of 18 she left England, and began a great journey across many continents. Jennifer was a fiercely independent and politically minded woman who spent years living in NYC, where she worked as a television producer for NBC, and later produced documentaries on the history of Rock-n-Roll, Ravi Shankar, and US Presidents. In 1981 she moved to the Virgin Islands for 10 years where she became involved in the reggae/world beat music scene. In 1991 she moved to Taos, where she was known as Sister Jennifer, from her radio show, Roots and Branches. She went on to produce the Rocking the Boat Series, a music and history radio program for NPR. In 2011, she co-authored with Hugh Stiles Golson, Andrew Low and the sign of the Buck: Trade, Triumph, Tragedy at the House of Low, a biography on her ancestor’s history in England and Savannah, Georgia. She is survived by her son Alex Cserhat, her three grandchildren, Niko, Aidan, Tigerlily, daughter-in-law Melissa Haye-Cserhat, her brother James Guthrie and her nephew Guy Lees-Milne. Jennifer is preceded in death by her brothers David and Simon, niece Rebecca, and ex-husband Ludwig “Joe” Cserhat. She will be missed.
