Progressives not radical leftists

- By Daniel Pritchard Daniel Pritchard is a resident of Taos County and operates a community-based water system.

We will soon have an realitybased, experienced leader in the White House. Trump supporters were taught to fear “socialism” and that it will overtake the United States of America. Actually, the USA has historic socialist underpinnings. Consider the following: Do you drive on public roads or interstate highways, visit the public library, drink water from a community water system? Rely on the fire department and local law enforcement? Do you enjoy public parks, national forests, monuments and other natural resources? Do you depend on the US Military to defend USA borders and interests? These are all “social” constructs, taking into account both individual needs and greater social needs.

Don’t confuse “progressives” with “socialism,” succumbing to a Cold-War, red-baiting scare tactic. According to Fox News exit polls, 72 percent of voters of all stripes want “a government-run healthcare plan” and 70 percent support “increasing government spending on green and renewable energy.” Yes, government for the people and of the people. Today’s capitalism is predatory and benefits only the 1 percent. It has evolved past it’s usefulness to greater social needs. President-elect Biden won counties that represent 70 percent of the USA’s economy. That is huge. These are not Cold-War socialists. They are US citizens who seek progress and call themselves Progressives; their concerns are safe air and water, preservation of lands and equal access to food, healthcare and medicine. These are not “radical leftist” ideas. These are fundamental human needs.
