HIVE helps community navigate difficult digital waters

- By TAYLOR HOOD thood@taosnews.com

As the world becomes more technologically advanced and businesses increasingly shift toward online workspaces, the University of New Mexico-Taos HIVE is rising to the education challenge.

The HIVE (Hub of InternetBased Vocations and Education) is hosting three courses designed to help small businesses, nonprofits and community members gain valuable digital skills.

“Transitioning to remote living, learning and working has tested our skills in ways we never imagined. It has also shown us how important it is to close gaps in education and access, to ensure our entire community is able to thrive,” HIVE said in an email.

Starting in January, HIVE will begin by offering “Computer Fundamentals.” This free course will help prepare people for further UNM computer classes. It uses the Northstar Digital Literacy curriculum to determine a student’s existing computer skills, as well as teach basics for beginners. Enrollment ends Jan. 22.

The next course offered is “Online Readiness,” which helps students navigate the online world and adapt to new programs as they encounter them. According to HIVE, “This course will ... provide the tools to help troubleshoot when they encounter problems.”

Lastly, HIVE is offering “Intro to the Google Platform,” a course designed to help people who already have extensive computer skills, but want to learn how to better collaborate with partners online.
