Art, activism film series

LEMEBEL. Directed by Joanna Reposi Garibaldi. Runtime: 1hr. 36-min. documentary, art / Chile, Columbia / 2019 / NR

Chilean performance artist, writer, anti-fascist, cross-dresser, and queer activist Pedro Lemebel (1952-2015) was a larger-than-life icon of his country’s gay liberation movement. In both his work and his life, he blended humor with spectacle, working for a new and expansive view of sexuality rooted in solidarity with all marginalized groups. LEMEBEL is an artistic biography of a brilliant and provocative man, and an intimate portrait of an artist at the end of his days. Director Joanna Reposi Garibaldi, a friend of Lemebel’s, gathers archival footage, images, and slides from Lemebel’s personal collection. At his own urging, she continues to film him during his last weeks, before his death from throat cancer.

Art and history

“Artist Lab: Art Meets History in New Mexico” (deadline Sunday, Feb. 28) brings historic content into artists’ contemporary practices, working with and learning from stellar U.S. faculty. A collaboration between 516 ARTS, Kolaj Institute, and Albuquerque Museum Photo Archives, the Artist Lab looks at how our divergent histories of

race, conflict, and colonialism inform how we imagine our futures. 516ARTS Scholarships available to artists from New Mexico, Mexico (US/Mexico border focus), and Native American, Alaskan Native or First Nations artists.

Participating artists asked to work from their own people’s history, to confront that history and to imagine a future that offers justice, fairness and support for

all people. Four-week online program consists of 12-15 sessions scheduled around participants’ schedules. A goal of the lab is a proposal for a body of artwork to be considered for a group exhibition at 516 ARTS in 2022.
