“It’s really pretty amazing,” said Sylvia Petree, co-owner of Petree Nursery and Greenhouses. “We have 10 greenhouses here, all dripping with healthy homegrown plants and varieties, and acres of trees and shrub material, which makes Petree’s a satisfying destination for all plant lovers.”

“Our helpful, knowledgeable, hardworking staff, and our customers, make it all possible,” she added.

If you live in the Enchanted Circle, chances are your growing environment is special. You need plants and trees that know how to live here and the advice of experts who know how best to care for them. Petree Nursery & Greenhouses in Taos is the one place that’s exclusively dedicated to helping locals get the best performance out of the living elements of their outdoor spaces. Owners Mike Petree and Sylvia Petree, along with the Petree’s staff, bring over 200 years’ combined experience growing and caring for plant life in Taos and surrounding areas. They also have an on-staff ISA-certified arborist available three days a week to provide guidance specific to the care of trees here in the high desert.

“Our goal is to have folks succeed in their garden projects, and we try to steer them away from buying plants that won’t do well for them,” said Mike Petree. “We educate people so they’ll get what will work for them and not waste their money on what doesn’t.”

Petree Nursery & Greenhouses do more than provide the goods; they are the growers. This means customers can see first-hand the conditions plants prefer to grow in. For example, sunloving varieties are displayed in full-sun conditions, while shade plants are found under trees or in a greenhouse under shade cloth. A quick browse around the grounds and visit with one of the on-staff experts is a great way to get ideas for any yard or garden project.

In addition to live goods, the selection of supplies, tools, and materials available at Petree’s is more evidence of their in-depth understanding of how gardeners in the area like to grow. The wide variety of soils, amendments, and fertilizers is sure to include something to fit any style, from organic gardening to high-volume production, or just to get those prize-winning blooms.

Petree Nursery and Greenhouses has been the go-to spot for local gardeners and landscapers since the 1990s, and when 2020 came along and delivered a fresh set of challenges, they rose to it by launching an extensive campaign to communicate with customers on safety protocols and procedures during the pandemic. This included an enhanced website and an active Facebook presence to help people get what they needed even under continuously changing restrictions and guidelines. As a result of these efforts, they saw more new customers in 2020 and their list of loyal followers continues to grow in 2021 with newcomers to the area looking to liven up their new homes.

Petree’s is now open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 to 3 on Sundays. Plant lovers who follow them on Facebook are among the first to find out about new arrivals, sales and specials, and can learn more on their website at
