Something needs to be done about robocalls

- By David Rey David Rey lives in Valdez.

Humans have been blessed in the past 100 years with great technology. We have put men on the moon, with little cars to drive around on the surface. We have unmanned rovers and flying machines on Mars. We have space probes leaving our solar system and still sending back data. We as a species have developed enough nuclear weapons to destroy our planet. We have radios, televisions, cell phones and computers to make daily life easier. Please tell me why, with all of this technology we cannot stop robocalls.

They start at 8 a.m., go every hour and do not stop until 8 p.m.

They come from Chama, Eunice, Tucumcari and all over the state. I have tried blocking them, but then they find another number to call from. I have put my number on the “do not call” list – to no avail. If my cell phone would work in the valley then I wouldn’t even have a landline, but they would probably find a way to call my cell phone, too.

Surely, there must be some kind of privacy law that is being broken here, and if not, then there ought to be. It will take laws on the books to stop these irritating calls. So, what are we waiting for?

We need laws now to quell these unscrupulous businesses from their annoying robocalls. Why have all government employees neglected to address this ongoing problem? Our elected officials are all abdicating their duties with each passing day that this problem is not addressed. I am sure that there are much more pressing issues in this country, but this problem would be an easy fix. Make it illegal. It would be nice to wake up to an alarm clock once in a while rather than to an annoying robocall every morning.
