Seeking re-election to the Peñasco School Board

- By Mary Mascareñas Mary Mascareñas lives in Peñasco.

As I sit at home thinking of how things happen in our communities, I began to reminisce of the many people we owe gratitude for the things we are enjoying today. I will limit this to our Peñasco School District.

I want to acknowledge our founding fathers. These men were people with vision and commitment to allow our students to obtain a good education. The families of the following persons should feel very proud that they worked together to establish the Peñasco Independent School District once the Dominican Nuns were not allowed to continue teaching under the Peñasco Schools due to the famous Dixon Case. These men were Alfredo Romero – our first superintendent, Virgilio Trujillo (my dad), Vidal Maestas, Adelaido Lujan, Flavio Leyba, Amado Roybal and Felix Fernandez. Most of these men did not have a college degree, but they had a vision and commitment to serve our students so they could be educated close to their homes.

These men had common sense and dedicated their time to help our people in several ways. Today we have persons who also have respect, commitment, and dedication to make sure that this vision is not lost but advanced.

I have served our communities on many occasions. I have not shied away from anything that I can help with. At this time, I am a candidate seeking re-election for our school board. I want to thank our people for electing me in the past as one of the members of this important board. I started being a positive help as a student, later as a parent, booster club member, employee and a school board member. As a member, I have served in all capacities of the PISD. Belonging to the New Mexico School Board Association has been a very rewarding experience. Our Peñasco School District belongs to Region 2 together with Questa, Taos, Española, Los Alamos, Mesa Vista, Chama Valley, Jemez Mountain, Cuba, Pecos, Pojoaque Valley and Santa Fe. I have served as secretary, vice president, and president of our region. This also entitles me to be a member of the board of directors. I represent Peñasco Schools with the greatest honor and respect.

I did not start playing an important part to represent our southern communities yesterday. This takes much time, learning and working well with others to get things done. I have been acknowledged as an Unsung Hero, and Ambrose and I have been honored as Living Treasures for all the volunteer work we have provided in serving our communities, our county and our state. The National Council of The Knights of Columbus has also selected our Family as Family of the Month on the following years in 2015 and 2019.

These are just a few things we have been involved in. God has blessed us by allowing us to give service where service is needed. We love our communities and don’t appreciate when people want to divide us.

Voting is ongoing at the Peñasco Community Center from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
