The Taos High School Tigers got all they could handle on Saturday when they traveled to Pojoaque to face off against the Pojoaque Valley High School Elks. THS pulled out a 37-22 victory in their second-tolast game of the season, raising their record to 5-4, which includes a five-game winning streak.

The Elks opened the game with a hard-nosed offensive approach that got them on the board immediately. The Tigers finally got their footing thanks to the legs of star running back Matt Suazo, who helped the team even the score with a 19-yard rushing touchdown. At the end of the first quarter, the Tigers were up 8-7 thanks to a successful two-point conversion.

The Elks managed to score again in the second quarter, but the Tigers were done messing around and responded to the early Elks touchdown with three more of their own, all from Suazo. By halftime the score was 30-14.

But Pojoaque wasn’t going to give up. They exploded out of the locker room in the third quarter, going on a touchdown drive with their own two-point conversion. The Tigers came right back down the field and scored, putting the score at 37-22 (which ended up being the final score.)

The Tigers haven’t lost a game since Sept. 11 (an “away” game against St. Pius X) making their case for a solid playoff seed (ranking) in the championship tournament in November.

“We just need to finish strong,” said Coach Art Abreu. “Complacency is the enemy now.”

The team will travel to Moriarty to take on the Pintos on Oct. 29 in their final game of the regular season. Moriarty and Taos are currently tied for the lead in Class 4A District 2. That game kicks off at 7 p.m. at Moriarty High School.
