For Mary Domito, the woman affectionately known as ‘Mattress Mary,’ it started with

a feeling. And feelings being feelings — subjective and hard to describe — she couldn’t quite explain it but she knew what

she felt. One visit to Taos and she was home.

Eighteen years later, Domito is preparing for her seventh store opening — one that combines her

successful Mattress Mary’s Mountain Lifestyle and Taos Lifestyle

stores including her Double-M/ Taos branded products to create an

expanded, ‘Taos Lifestyle,’ a destination enterprise.

An essential part of any successful endeavor is the ability to listen. The best sales people are the

ones who listen and the strongest relationships are founded in solid listening skills. Domito’s success is

no different. “From the moment I first visited Taos, I’ve listened to

the people who live here. I knew I was drawn to the area and I was

curious as to what drew them too. It’s been the same with my cus

tomers. I’ve listened to what they wanted and needed and what they liked and didn’t like. Taos Lifestyle

is a compilation of all of those conversations,” explained Domito.

Taos Lifestyle: Taos’ innovative destination store

Taos Lifestyle will become a destination store for our community, one that not only offers high quality mattresses and furnishings but also curated gift items, provisions, branded apparel, and eventually locally-sourced artwork. It is only fitting that as Domito was looking for the right space for Taos Lifestyle the owners of the former El Taoseño Restaurant were preparing to retire and wanted to

sell their iconic building. “I wanted to create a destination for locals and tourists and when I realized

this historic building so full of memories and positive vibes next

door to my current location was for sale, the pieces fell into place,” added Domito.

From the time Domito first experienced the feeling that drew her home to Taos, she has tried

to capture that essence. In alignment with her work ethic and the passion she has for our commu

nity, she has big dreams for Taos Lifestyle. “I don’t want to lose the

authenticity that is Taos and its people. We’ve got a sophisticated grittiness about us and Taos Life

style will celebrate that. This isn’t going to be a generic store because nothing about Taos is generic,” she

said with palpable excitement in her voice.

Domito explained her vision for a gift shop that will lead to a home furnishings section and her successful line of mattresses with space

to linger and consider purchases. “Taos Lifestyle will give our community an opportunity to enjoy the

shopping experience in a way that cannot be replicated online. It will also give tourists and our return visitors a place to purchase gifts

that reflect the feeling that can’t quite be described — the Taos state of mind.”

The remodel will soon be underway with aspirations for a Grand Opening in July. The larger space will give Domito the opportunity

to add more outdoor furniture with a permanent section of patio and deck ensembles on display.

Domito’s reputation for supporting the people of Taos is well-known. The respect she has for the community is recipro

cal — she’s open to listening to what is wanted and needed as the town grows while maintaining the essence of what makes this place

so special. “Our community will always have the ability to visit and reflect on the memories they have of El Taoseño. The restaurant was

a part of so many lives and I cannot imagine Taos Lifestyle without having framed photographs on the walls of that iconic establishment,”

concluded Domito.
