The Lady Tigers won their ninth game in a row against the Pojoaque Valley Elkettes on Monday (Feb. 7) and improved to 15-6 for the season. They did so with their brand of hard-nosed defense, and their relentless driving to the basket.

The Lady Tigers have a habit of scoring right away from the tip-off. It happened again against the Elkettes, giving Taos a quick 2-point lead to start the game. However, the Elkettes were no pushovers. Tonni Aquinno offered strong resistance on any Lady Tiger attempting a jump shot near the paint. The problem for them was on the other end. Pojoaque was toothless on offense. Marisa Martinez scored their first basket with two minutes to go in the first quarter, cutting the Lady Tigers lead to 10, 2-12.

The Strong Lady Tiger defense prevented the Elkettes from scoring double digits in any single quarter. Aquinno’s nine points alone provided nearly half of the points scored by Pojoaque.

Due to Aquinno’s presence inside, Kionamua Ely started off slow, only scoring one field goal in the first quarter. She would find her groove throughout the

rest of the game, however, scoring 15 points on the night. Madelynn Quintana knocked down the game’s only two 3-pointers for both teams. The first one came early in the first and the second 3-pointer was drained halfway through the fourth quarter. Marika Moyer contributed eight points from her aggressive drives.

The Lady Tigers will play the Elkettes again in a rematch on Pojoaque’s home court on Thursday Feb. 10 at 7 p.m.
