Panthers boys, girls defeat Questa

- By JEANS PINEDA

The 122nd ranked Questa Wildcats (3-13) did their best to add another victory on the win column to their season record against the Peñasco Panthers on Friday (Feb. 4), but they got off on the wrong foot and ultimately defeat the opposing boys and girls teams from the other side of Taos County.

First, Questa received an administrative technical foul for an inaccuracy in their scorebook, when it was learned that one of the players had the wrong jersey number. Peñasco shot free throws before the game even started. Due to the immediate technical, the typical tip-off to a basketball game was foregone.

Then Elias Archibeque went on a scoring rampage against Questa. He scored 11 of the first 12 points and scored 38 for the game. The Wildcats were only down by 8 to start the fourth quarter but 2 of their starters

fouled out.

With a depleted roster the Wildcats were unable to get back in the game and lost 51-68.

The Lady Panthers were merciless in their 35-point blowout of the Questa Lady Wildcats. Four of Peñasco’s players scored double digits. Sophomore Analise Macauley had 23 for the game, senior Martina Tafoya had 15 points, Maricela MacAuley had 13 points, and eighth grader Rochelle Lopez added another 12 points for the game.

Given an inch of space on the perimeters, the Lady Wildcats would put up 3-pointers without the slightest hesitation. They don’t bog themselves down in complicated offensive formations. But their offensive philosophy alone can’t be faulted for the loss: Peñasco was too strong. The Lady Panthers won 71-36.
