Ever since starting the season losing their first seven games, the Lady Tigers softball team has regrouped and won three out of four matchups since.

Against the Lady Hilltoppers

On Saturday (April 2), the Lady Tigers traveled to Los Alamos for a double header against the Lady Hilltoppers. Freshman Mikiaela Guillen took the mound for Los Alamos. She’s been pitching a 2.00 ERA throughout the season. She was on pace to maintain that average until the third inning, when the Lady Tigers broke through the 0-0 deadlock with four runs.

Taos played a clean game overall, only committing one error to the Hilltoppers’ seven. The Lady Tigers were able to hang on to the lead and win it, 6-4.

In the second game, Los Alamos outplayed Taos in every department. Isabella Robertson threw a complete game shutout and was two hits shy of a no-hitter. Robertson registered 13 strikeouts and three walks while throwing 105 pitches.

The Lady Hilltoppers scored 10 runs off of 12 hits and evened the series for the day.

Against the Braves

On Thursday (March 31), the Lady Tigers traveled to Santa Fe Indian for a doubleheader against the Braves. The two games were near mirror images of one another.

Both games went 14-11 in the favor of Taos. Starting pitcher for Taos, Kendra Sandoval, pitched two complete games, 14 innings total.

The Braves had 13 hits in the first game and 12 hits in the second game. Taos scored 10 runs in a single inning in both games. They came in the second inning of the first game, and then in the fourth inning of the second game.

The Lady Tigers swept the doubleheader.

Coach Roman Abreu talked about the growth of the team and adjusting to the warm spring weather.

“We cleaned up a bit. We got a little tired in the heat,” Abreu said.

“That was the one thing — we haven’t been in 60-plus-degree weather yet out here ... We’re finally getting used to it ... We still got a few things to clean up early into our year. A lot of teams are still late, mid-season, but we’re still growing, a lot of potential. So it’s really good to finish our week, like we did with those three out of four.”
