-

This Sunday (Oct. 16) from 11 a.m. to noon, David Gilroy and Chris Bergener will give presentations for a program on Agriculture, Food Resilience and Community in Taos at the Unitarian Congregation, located at the Bent Lodge, 124 Camino de Santiago, Taos. Open to all with Covid precautions — masks required.

David Gilroy is the Conservation Education and Program Associate for Taos Soil & Water Conservation District (TSWCD) since 2019. He is the director of conservation education, soil health and water programs. At present, he and other TSWCD staff are partnering with landowners throughout Taos County as they employ winter cover crops to help regenerate impaired agricultural soils. He resides with his wife and two kids in his home village of San Cristóbal.

With formal schooling from Taos High School (’96), UNM (‘01), and the U. of Wisconsin (‘08), he works to bridge the gap between scientific research and public education. His professional experience includes ecological field research, youth career development in conservation work, and high school science teaching.

Chris Bergener is co-owner and farmer with his wife Fiona of Copper Pot Farm in Llano Quemado. He has farmed in Taos for 10 years starting with field crops like garlic, potatoes, peas and squash in Talpa where they irrigated from the Acequia Madre Del Rio Chichito. Later the farm moved to Miranda Canyon (Llano Quemado) where irrigation is off the Ponce De Leon/ Emilio Chaves Acequia. Chris and Fiona are assisted, on the farm, by their three young sons.

“During the growing season you can find us in the field planting seeds, watering the fields, cultivating the earth, and harvesting the bounty. We want our farm to produce the healthiest food for our family, and to share this harvest of goodness with you.” Chris is also and an active member of the Taos Farmers’ Market Board.
