Aging in place, with a little help
Ask any elder if they would like to spend their last years at home or in an institution, and you will get a resounding “at home!” Sometimes, just a little help is needed to make that possible.
Taos Elders and Neighbors Together (TENT) has been providing that help since 2018 and is committed to making sure that all who need transportation, minor home maintenance, computer assistance, caregiver relief, etc. in order to remain independent are accommodated, regardless of income. Our mission statement is: “To connect members to resources needed to maintain comfortable, dignified, vibrant lives in their homes and community by providing appropriate services, activities, and programs that will further this purpose.”
We have just reduced membership rates and offer payment plans, a sliding scale and scholarships. No one has been turned away for lack of funds.
While many nonprofits shut down during the COVID pandemic, TENT helped members get vaccinations and boosters. We also implemented precautions to keep members and volunteers safe. Social contact has been especially important during this time, as many members live alone, and check-in calls from TENT volunteers are a crucial service.
Kathleen N. arrived in Taos two years ago without transportation, and she was sick for much of the first year. “TENT volunteers got me to medical appointments, and also took me grocery shopping and to a few museum visits,” she said. “If not for TENT, I would have felt like a shut-in.”
Our new office space doubles as a venue for social activities, which currently include dominoes, a book club and weaving. Tai chi is also offered at varied locations.
Our organization needs more volunteers and would especially welcome younger folks. Many of the current volunteers are in the same age bracket as the members and, at some point, may not be able to “pay it forward.” The rewards are many. A recent survey revealed the perks volunteers most enjoyed, including an easy sign-up schedule, meeting and getting to know interesting people, giving back to the community, and making others feel happy and cared about.
