Robert Jay Silver
A psychologist, writer, gadfly, husband, father, grandfather, friend and lover of life passed away February 1, 2023. Bob was born in New York City, New York on August 6, 1942 to Harry Silver and Helen Selkin Silver. After graduating from Bronx High School of Science, he attended The City College of the University of New York where he received a BA in 1965. Then venturing West, he studied at Indiana University and received his
Ph.D. in clinical psychology in 1972. His professional career began at Illinois State University as an assistant Professor of psychology, Coordinator of the Clinical Psychology Training Program and staff Psychologist of the Psychological Counseling Service until 1975. He then moved to Austin, Texas as the Director of Internship Training at Austin State Hospital and became an Adjunct Professor of Psychology for the University of Texas at Austin. He also maintained an independent practice of clinical and forensic psychology. In 1993 Bob married his wife Dianne. They had met in a running group on Town Lake Trail in Austin seven years prior when they began many adventures of traveling and sailing often with friends. Activities such golf, tennis, skiing, hiking, jazz, classical concerts and dancing were enjoyed whenever and wherever they could find an opportunity. Bob eventually semi-retired to Taos with Dianne where Bob could continue his forensic work part time. Although he was a proficient writer in his profession, he wished to delve into creative writing by enrolling in classes at UNM. Writing became his forte and many remember him for his often controversial, no holds barred My Turn articles in the Taos News. In addition, he published two books, Tributes and Tirades and Keepin’ On, Living Well with Parkinson’s Disease. The latter has helped many patients and loved ones throughout the country. His courage, tenacity, and living in a courageous, honest and positive way through his 17 years with Parkinson’s disease has inspired and touched many lives. He seemed to charm everyone he met with his warmth and wit. Everyone was a friend. So many have smiled when they were handed a “rubber ducky” by Bob. He always hoped he could improve our world by one percent, showing up and standing his ground at town council meetings and hospital board meetings, serving on community boards, advocating for improved roads in the neighborhood, a myriad of projects. He will be missed! He is survived by his loving wife Dianne Frost, children Julie Silver, Greg Silver, stepsons, Larry Eich, Brad Eich, Rodger Eich, grandchildren, Ande Eich, Madison Eich, Emily Eich, Zoe Eich, Becket Eich, and sister Lois Silver Koral (Jerry).
