Flamenco with the Wildflower Playhouse and ReVóZo

- STAFF REPORT

THE WILDFLOWER PLAYHOUSE and ReVóZo invite you to share in an intimate evening of Flamenco on Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Wildflower Playhouse, featuring Vicente Griego, Gabriel Lautaro Osuna, Danilo Bauvallet, Madison Olguin, Jainera Cordova, Cienna Chavez and Tessa Torres.

ReVóZo, directed by Vicente Griego, will present “Noche de Flamenco” as part of their “Pa’Lante y Pa’Tras” series featuring a unique presentation of Flamenco rooted in Northern New Mexico tradition, culture and history.

“Pa’Lante, Pa’Tras” is a musical series that celebrates the Northern New Mexico style of both old and new palos of Flamenco. These songs and rhythms have existed in Northern New Mexico for many generations, but even more magical is the new style of palos created by Vicente Griego, songs with the archaic influences of Flamenco, Ranchera and Comanche forged into an original style that brings the heart and spirit of the mountain to the stage.

Enrique Lamadrid, PhD and Historian, refers to Vicente Griego as, Nuevo México’s “greatest cantaor.”

Known by the nickname “El Cartucho” (gunpowder shell), Griego is known for his explosive performances. When he was in Morón, Spain, he played his family’s Comanche songs for other canta’ores, who immediately noticed that the rhythms were the same as the Martinete songs that gypsy miners sing, with the sharp, metallic percussion of the drop hammer drills used in the mines. His father and grandfather were miners in Northern New Mexico.

In looking at the history of this area, one can understand how a Spanish art form can take on its own dialect but remain reminiscent of ballads from long ago.

Joining Vicente Griego on stage will be Gabriel Lautaro Osuna, guitarist and international artist; Gabriel has graced stages across Mexico, the U.S. and Spain. An Embudo Valley Native, Gabriel was born to a family of artists and musicians in New Mexico; he began singing hymns and laments as a child and went on to pursue the study and performance of flamenco guitar in Spain and abroad. Gabriel will also be featured on March 18 at the Wildflower Playhouse in “Strings,” a musical showcase featuring the intricate study of guitar.

Danilo Bauvallet will be joining ReVóZo on percussion; an Albuquerque native, he was first introduced to the drums at six months old. He took the stage at 13 years old and has been playing ever since. Danilo has accompanied groups such as Son Como Son and Revozo. Danilo continues to study and perform throughout New Mexico and the U.S.

Madison Olguin, a local Taoseña, will debut as a ReVóZo soloist upon her return from her studies in Madrid, Spain. Madison has recently returned from an immersive study abroad at the University of Pontificia Comillas, studied flamenco at Amor de Dios, participated in a Taller de Tablao at Las Corboneras, Las Tablas and Tablao Sala Temple. She is currently studying at UNM’s prestigious Flamenco Program, while simultaneously performing professionally.

Y Las Primas, the talented ReVóZo Cuadro, Jainera Cordova, Cienna Chavez and Tessa Torres will accompany with their diverse talents con baile y cante.
