Yetis come back against Ice Tigers

- By JEANS PINEDA jpineda@taosnews.com

In their final home game of the season on Friday (Feb. 25) the Ice Tigers had the Yetis on the ropes entering the third period with a 4-2 lead, but Alamosa rallied to come through with the victory, 6-5.

Four different Ice Tigers–Benjamin Currey, Sebastian Ruiz, David Vargas and Hayden Greyworld found the back of the net through a concerted team effort to score their first four goals. Two of those goals were assisted by Vargas.

In the second period Taos dealt with two separate penalties, a hooking penalty on Vargas around the five-minute mark, and a checking from behind call on Ilan O’Donnell with little over a minute to go. In spite of the four total minutes of power play potential for the Yetis, the Ice Tigers held a strong shape in the back line and didn’t allow a goal.

Alamosa Yeti Agustus Miller turned it up to another level in the third period, though.

The blonde-haired Yeti flew to the net in a blur. Most notably in an 11-second reply to an Ice Tigers goal at the 5:47 mark. Eleven seconds after the faceoff Miller was face to face with Taos goalie Cale Childers where he scored Alamosa’s sixth goal that would end up being the game-winning goal. He gathered a hat trick in the third period alone and all but one of those goals was unassisted.

Taos brought numbers forward in an attempt to convert an equalizing goal, but Clayton Treinen made crucial save after crucial save with Ice Tigers storming the Yeti’s net. The Yeti’s won 6-5 after an eventful third period.

Childers racked up a whopping 44 saves in the losing effort, however.

After the match Ice Tigers coach Shawn Cisneros spoke with the Taos News on his team’s performance in their last home game of the season.

“Compared to the last home game this was awesome. Because I mean, one, the reffing was amazing compared to last time. The team was in better spirits because of it. And we were right there. There’s some things we need to work on, but we’re coming around.”

The Ice Tigers 18U team ends their first season back on the ice after the pandemic with a regular season record of 1-11.
