True to his roots

- By Will Hooper

Ryan Trujillo spent 12 years away from his hometown of Taos before deciding to pursue a career in real estate, helping those close to his roots with all their real estate needs throughout Northern New Mexico — something that can be harder and harder to come by these days.

When Trujillo moved back home in 2019 after spending a dozen years scattered across California, Europe and periodic trips back to the Land of Enchantment, he decided to relocate to the place he knew best. Trujillo said a deciding factor in the decision to call Northern New Mexico home was due to his desire “to help family and reconnect with my roots.” Now, in 2023, Trujillo said he finds himself helping the people of Northern New Mexico, “as if I am helping my own family,” with all of their real estate needs.

During 2022 — Trujillo’s third year in the industry, he was recognized within the top 5 individual producing brokers amongst the entire New Mexico Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices system, which consists of over 240 brokers.

Trujillo credited much of his early success to the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices team and the Page Sullivan Group — “which consists of local realtors who thrive to provide their clients with the utmost attention, professionalism, honesty, and cutting-edge services, and by treating them as if they are family,” Trujillo said.

As part of the Page Sullivan Group, Trujillo is a vital piece of the topproducing team within the Northern New Mexico real estate market over recent years. For the third year in a row his team has earned a rare position within the top tenth of one percent within the BHHS Global franchise, becoming a part of the “Diamond threshold.” Their team also ranks number one amongst all teams at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New Mexico Properties.

Trujillo said he believes everything in his short career as a realtor has happened “organically — by staying true to my roots, the community, and my customers day-in and day-out.” He also credited his familia, for their constant support, and to help get his name out to the community.

Trujillo expanded on his local roots: His late grandfather, Luis C. Martinez, owned the Texaco & Gulf Gas Station (located on the corner of Taos Plaza for many years); his aunt Dolores Trujillo was as an educator within the Taos School system; his parents Francina Martinez and Philip Trujillo are real estate and construction professionals of over 30 years; and his family members were the former owners of the iconic El Taoseño Restaurant which he helped transact to Mattress Mary of Taos Lifestyle.

One major focus for Trujillo “is to be more of a local guide and overall resource, rather than just a realtor,” he said. “Northern New Mexico is such a culturally rich community, surrounded by an incredibly diverse landscape that offers a plethora of activities to experience, and breathtaking views to witness, all of which make it the perfect place to live and visit.”

As a sixth-generation New Mexican, he hopes his experience will help to share the history and awe of the region. Local education is a large goal, with Trujillo publishing a “Local Guide to Northern New Mexico” in the most recent edition of Taos News’ Discover Taos magazine.

“I want to make sure that the people visiting and living in the region make an effort to understand the culture, traditions and people of Northern New Mexico,” he said, citing his passion for supporting local galleries, shops and businesses. “It’s important to have conversations, be respectful and ask questions,” he said.

He described Northern New Mexico as “a diverse melting pot which makes this part of the world so unique. Many of the individuals who own our shops and businesses are multi-generational New Mexicans who enjoy sharing their recollections of the past, and their visions for the future.”

Trujillo also acknowledged some of the challenges within our community, including limited affordable housing, overpopulation within our animal shelters, water preservation due to climate change, elderly care and support, and other issues he believes “we must tackle together, and as a community, to ensure the region preserves our deep history, heritage and remains a place for all to call home for many generations to come.”

Ultimately, Trujillo wants to help as many people as he can, especially when it comes to the hard decisions that come along with buying or selling a home, vacant land, or commercial properties. Trujillo invites the community to email, call or text him directly to ask questions about the region or to discuss the real estate market.
