Taos Youth Hockey to host Coyote Classic

‘I’m amazed by how much the kids grow and learn each season.’

The Jr. Taos Ice Tigers will host the Coyote Classic Ice Hockey Tournament this Friday through Sunday (March 17-19) at the Taos Youth and Family Center, located at 407 Paseo del Canon East. The Taos Youth Hockey Associatio­n will run the tournament over three days, with championsh­ip games in all divisions.

This year’s tournament marks the first Coyote Classic Ice Hockey Tournament since 2019, according to a press release prepared by Emily Méndez, Taos Youth Hockey Associatio­n treasurer. The Coyote Classic will feature 20 teams from three states across four age divisions. All games are free, and spectators are welcome.

Starting on the half-ice with the U6 Mini-Mites, the Taos Jr. Ice Tigers team will compete against Los Alamos, Albuquerqu­e and Bernalillo teams. Also on the half-ice, the U8 Mites

Jr. Ice Tigers will be playing the NMAHA Scorpions, El Paso Rhinos, Amarillo Wranglers, and two NM Ice Wolves teams. Both divisions will host their championsh­ip game Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

Taking the full ice, the 10U Squirts Jr. Ice Tigers will be competing with NMAHA Scorpions, two NM Ice Wolves teams, and the Hyland Hills Jaguars out of Westminste­r, Col. The division championsh­ip game is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.

Head Coach Jesse Cook said he is “excited to finish our winning season strong!” The 12U PeeWee Jr. Ice Tigers, led by head coach Mark Richert, are playing against the NMAHA Scorpions, Pueblo Bulls, San Luis Valley Yetis and the El Paso Rhinos. The PeeWee division championsh­ip game is on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
