Sparking life-long fires

- By Michael Tashji BAILEY’S CHIMNEY LLC

For more than 20 years, Bailey’s Chimney has remained a top-rated service provider in Northern New Mexico for fireplace sales, repairs, restorations and replacements.Whether you burn cedar, pinion, pine or spruce, their courteous staff of certified chimney professionals are here to make sure your fireplace, wood stove and pellet stove is clean, up to code and safe for home-heating.

“In the Southwest, we have a number of different types of architecture,” said co-owner and lead technician Patrick Rael. “From the early-1900s — sometimes even the 1800s. There’s never a dull moment, because each fireplace — it’s almost as though it has its own personality.”

Rael and co-owner Doreenda Martinez oversee the staff of seven technicians and two office personnel as they service customers as far south as Albuquerque and as far north as the Colorado border.

Bailey’s Chimney is certified by the Chimney Safety Institute of America, National Fireplace Institute and the National Chimney Sweeps Guild.

“This keeps us in a position where we have to continually train and invest in educating ourselves and our employees — to be up to date and well-versed with the latest standards and codes — to assure that customers are safe and that they’re educated with their home-heating systems,” Rael said.

“Our goal is to not just do a cleaning or inspection, but to get people more acquainted with this beautiful fireplace or wood stove that they have in their home.”

Rael urges customers to heed the National Fire Protection Association’s

(NFPA) recommendation for annual inspection of fireplaces and wood stoves, regardless of usage. Their team also conducts complimentary dryer vent checks along with their chimney service. Martinez says don’t forget to schedule your annual cleaning in the spring/summer to take advantage of discounts and get yourself ready for the next burning season.

In addition to providing stellar customer service to residential and commercial clients (a consistent winner of the Best of Taos business rankings — according to locals), Bailey’s also restores fireplaces in historic buildings, like the Martinez Hacienda and The Taos Inn.

“That’s something that we enjoy a lot because they’re known nationwide — even worldwide,” Rael said. The company’s probono work included a full restoration of the fireplace within the old blacksmith shop at the Martinez Hacienda.

“They use that fireplace every day now. It does what they need it to do — to continually provide the rich history that Taos has to offer,” Rael said. “And it’s awesome that we get to be a part of that.”

When the historic Taos Inn recently renovated its interior, Bailey’s Chimney was tapped to refurbish the century-old fireplace.

“Recently, we went there to teach the staff at the Taos Inn how to start and burn a more efficient fire in that fireplace,” Rael said, adding that his intention is for that knowledge to be passed on to others down the road. “Again, that’s fulfilling.” 1470 Paseo del Pueblo Norte Unit 2, El Prado, NM 87529 505-988-2771 baileyschimney.com
