A hippity hoppin Easter Eggtravaganza in Kit Carson Park

- BY TAMRA TESTERMAN

FOR THE FIRST TIME, the Town of Taos, has teamed up with League of United Latin American Citizens [LULAC] and Super Save Discount Food Store to create the ultimate Easter Eggtravaganza for Taos youth: 10,0000 eggs, toys, cash prizes, bicycles and a visit with Trixie the Easter bunny! It all happens this Easter Sunday, April 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Kit Carson Park.

Celebrating Easter with an egg hunt has been a Taos tradition for over half a century. Community Events Coordinator Judy Esquibel said in the past, LULAC hosted the Kit Carson egg hunt and the Town of Taos did an aquatic version at the city pool. A lifeguard shortage presented an opportunity to create a brand new adventure — LULAC’s Orlando Vigil and Esquibel hope the success of this year’s event is the first of many collaborations. Here are the details:

The hunt is divided into four age divisions: 1-3-year-olds at 1 p.m., 4-6-yearolds at 1:30 p.m., 7-9-year-olds at 1:50 p.m. and 10-12-year-olds at 2 p.m. in individual sections of the park. Participants need to be prompt, as each hunt will start at its scheduled time. The Easter Egg Hunt will feature over 10,000 filled eggs and small sports balls.

Bring a container to collect your eggs and sports balls. For each age group, there will be small sports balls and colored eggs filled with small toys, candy or tickets that can be redeemed for an Easter goody bag, egg decorating kits and coloring cups. The grand prize Easter eggs for 1-3-year-olds is a new bike; for 4-6-year-olds, also a new bike; for 7-9-year-olds, a $50 gift card; and for 10-12-year-olds, a $50 gift card.

For teens 13-18 years old, there will be team relay races, gunny sack races, spoon and egg races, jump rope and three-legged races at noon and at 2 p.m.

Bring the kids to meet the Easter Bunny and snap a photo. Trixie the Easter Bunny, will hand out free 14-inch bubble wands to the first 400 children. Preserve your memories with a picture with Trixie. There will be an advance sign up with a QR code to retrieve your free downloadable image. Images will be accessible on Monday April 10. If you would like to purchase additional photos, you may do so from your online portfolio (a valid credit card is required for purchase).

DJ Chicharron from Native Winds Radio will spin the music. There will also be sundry games, crafts and bounce houses (weather permitting), and much more. Come out to Kit Carson Park and celebrate the Easter holiday — bring a picnic, chairs and blankets to make yourself cosy.

Free event parking will be available at the entranceway of Kit Carson Park, the TCA parking lots, Municipal Court/ Civic Center parking lot, Town Hall and Taos Public Library. Parking with special accessibility features at the entrance of Kit Carson Park.

This event is sponsored by League of United Latin American Citizens Council # 78 (LULAC), Super Save Discount Food Store, Town of Taos Parks and Recreation Division, Big Brothers/Big Sisters Taos, DJ Chicharron and Native Winds Radio, Rodeo de Taos Royalty representing the Taos County Sheriff’s Posse, Through My Lens Photography with PJ Bishop, Town of Taos Police Department, and True Kids 1.
