Peñasco volleyball

The Peñasco Lady Panthers are in the midst of a two-game slide after losing 3-0 to the Dulce Lady Hawks Oct. 6. Peñasco now sits at 5-5 as the district season comes into view. The Lady Panthers will have one more non-district match when they welcome the Pecos Lady Panthers to La Jicarrita Gymnasium Oct. 14. The Saturday evening meet-up will round out the homeand-home arrangemen­t with Pecos and bring an end to Peñasco’s regular season.

The Lady Panthers began their district 5-2A season in Mora, taking on the Rangerette­s Tuesday (Oct. 10). Mora is coming off a very successful 2022 season, which saw the Rangerette­s finish with an 18-9 overall tally and an 8-2 district record. Mora placed second behind the Escalante Lady Lobos, who went undefeated in district play. The Rangerette­s ended up going deep into the state volleyball tournament ranked 12th, with upset wins over 5th-ranked Escalante and number 11, Eunice. Mora is in rebuild mode this year and entered the match with Peñasco with a 2-7 overall record. Final score and details of the game were not available before this section went to press.

District play resumes tonight (Oct. 12) when the Lady Panthers welcome the McCurdy (Española) Lady Bobcats to La Jicarrita Gymnasium. Peñasco stays at home for their third district tilt when the Escalante Lady Lobos come to town Oct. 17. All remaining matches will follow a Tuesday/Thursday pattern, and all varsity matches begin at 6 p.m.

Questa soccer

For the second time this season, the Questa Wildcats fell short to the Taos Tigers JV by a single point, allowing a goal in the second half of their home-and-home wrap-up match to lose 1-0. The outcome leveled out the Wildcat’s overall record to 4-4 on the season.

Questa was on the road this week, visiting the Moreno Valley Timberwolv­es in Angel Fire Monday (Oct. 9) and the Academy for Technology and The Classics (ATC) in Santa Fe Wednesday (Oct. 11). Final score and details of the ATC match were not available before

Questa continues their district season next week as they welcome ATC to Wildcat Stadium for the back-to-back match Oct. 16

Questa football

The Questa Wildcats gridiron squad claimed victory at home against the Pine Hill Warriors Oct 7. It was the first win of the season and garnered the Wildcats a district and homecoming triumph as their 2023 season winds down. Questa dominated the Warriors from the onset, scoring 52 unanswered points and initiating the mercy rule.

Questa concludes their district season and wraps up their 2023 campaign with a road game against the Legacy Academy (Albuquerqu­e) Silverback­s Oct. 14. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Questa volleyball

Riding a two-game win streak, the Questa Ladycats entered the district season atop the 5-A/2A standings with an overall record of 7-3 (.700 win-percentage). In their final regular season match against the Dulce Lady Hawks Oct. 5, Questa produced three solid set wins (25-13, 25-18 and 25-22) with of barrage of kills and a healthy dose of service aces.

League play began for the Ladycats at home when they welcomed the Escalante (Tierra Amarilla) Lady Lobos to the “Mini-Pit” Tuesday (Oct. 10). Escalante ended the 2022 season as district champions, notching a 20-2 overall record and 10-0 among 5-A/2A teams, before falling to the Mora Rangerette­s and Tularosa Lady Wildcats at state. Before their last match, the Lady Lobos were 6-7, and on a two-game losing streak. Final score and details of the game were not available before this section went to press.

For their second district match, Questa is in Mora tonight (Oct. 12) to challenge the 2-7 Rangerette­s. The Ladycats stay on the road next week as they travel to Ojo Caliente to take on the 1-9 Mesa Vista Lady Trojans Oct. 17. All remaining matches will follow a Tuesday/ Thursday pattern and all varsity matches begin at 6 p.m.
