OVERNIGHT SUCCESSES are never the result of going to sleep one night and waking the next morning to some magical existence of instant success. But for all the musicians who have worked at their craft for years, often decades, and been described as an overnight success, Paula Cole may come the closest to the actual thing. Rewind to the late ‘90s (1997 to be specific), and seemingly out of nowhere Cole’s album, “This Fire,” caught the attention of Sarah McLachlan’s Lilith Fair traveling music festival, and Cole was almost instantly everywhere. The backstory — “This Fire” was Cole’s second album.

Lilith Fair, the summertime traveling music festival, was comprised solely of female solo musicians and female-led bands. Cole, with her hits “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone” and “I Don’t Want to Wait” was an integral part of those near cult-like popular concerts. Her success with Lilith Fair led to her winning the Grammy for Best New Artist in 1998. If you do the math and read the rules, Cole wasn’t technically eligible to be nominated, much less win the Grammy considering her first album was released in 1994. Math and rule books were presumably for other people in that case; Cole was nominated and took home the hardware. The overnight success moniker stuck.

Winning a Best New Artist award for a sophomore album is just one way Cole has been misunderstood. Arguably the most feminist of the feminists on the Lilith Fair stage, Cole’s breakaway hit, “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone” was misinterpreted by many. The song with the lilting rifts was intended to be a social commentary on traditional gender stereotypes. Many mistook the lyrics to be about a woman yearning for a macho manly type who could ride in on his white horse and rescue her. For the openly bisexual Cole, the song was the antithesis of that. In one interview she explained that outside of America, people loved the irony of the song.

“The shiny gun is a phallic reference, totally tongue-in-cheek. They loved it in Spain but America didn’t get that,” she said.

More than 25 years have passed since Cole, a Berklee College of Music grad, burst into the public eye. Another less successful album followed “This Fire.” She married and later divorced. One result of that relationship was her daughter, Sky, and Cole stepped away from the limelight to raise her daughter.

The music and lyrics returned and over the years Cole broadened her reach experimenting with electronica, hip-hop as well as an eclectic, jazzinfluenced adult contemporary style. Now touring and singing songs from her eleventh studio album, “Lo,” which she wrote and produced, her music today confirms what Lilith Fair fans knew then: Cole is a complex combination of feminist, provocateur, rebel, and truth-teller.

On Saturday, April 27, Cole will share some of those truths on the TCA stage. According to reviews, “Lo” has been described as, “devastatingly personal.” Recorded and mixed by nine-time Grammy-winning engineer, Mike Piersante, “Lo” was recorded entirely live and includes 11 songs. The album features Cole’s range from a low alto whisper to a primal-like scream — and everything in between.
