Phoenix Mechanical’s team delivers

- BY ELLEN MILLER-GOINS

Every weekday morning Phoenix Mechanical’s fleet of shiny red trucks leaves the business for jobs all over Northern New Mexico, so it’s rare to find owner-managers Kabir Cain, Ky Sturges and Jason Struck in one place. This sunny day they have come together to share the progress on continuing jobs. Currently they are installing 30,000-plus-gallon storage tanks to assist rural communities prepare for the growing threat of forest fires. Located in Cerro, Latir, San Cristobal, Carson and Taos Canyon, these reservoirs provide quick, easy filling so fire trucks can get water to where it is needed.

With a team of around 35 plumbers, electricians and dedicated professionals, Phoenix Mechanical is equipped for all your mechanical needs. As Sturges notes “We do everything but the building. If it takes power, water or gas… we’ll check it out.” Phoenix provides service for everything from new construction and remodels, to service and repairs. As Struck points out, “our strength is in our diversity.

We all have different strengths, but as a team we are prepared for the challenges that come our way”.

All three owner/managers have over 20 years experience and each provides expertise in particular areas. Jason has plenty of experience in commercial and industrial piping. Kabir’s experience is mostly in service and diagnostics, and Ky has extensive knowledge of parts and supply chains. Along with overseeing the shop and inventory, Ky also supervises fleet maintenance. They meet every week to discuss ongoing and upcoming projects and strategize working in an ever-evolving market. Partnering to provide rebates This past year Phoenix has partnered with New Mexico Gas Company to provide clients with instant rebates for installing high efficiency water and space heating. Rebates can be a few hundred dollars for residential and several thousand dollars for commercial environments.

Currently the highest demand is for cooling and heat pump options. Cain says, “advancements that have taken place over the last 20 years in personal climate control have been astounding”. Phoenix now has heat pump options capable of providing a welcome chill on a hot summer’s day, as well as heating to a space when it is -15F outside. People are always interested in lowering utility costs and moving to high efficiency units helps achieve that goal. The second biggest demand is for high efficiency boilers and water heaters that also qualify for an immediate rebate, which Phoenix assists in processing. Initially, these systems are a little more expensive to install,

but they offer reduced energy costs forever after.

Keep it clean, please! What can homeowners do to minimize the need for service calls? The Phoenix team recommends flushing your water heater once a year to prevent sediment from building up. Also be gentle with drains. (“Flushable” wipes usually cause problems.) Cain states, “the easiest and most effective thing that all homeowners can do is to keep mechanical equipment, and the space around it, clean and unobstructed. Everybody in the service industry has a story about how simply cleaning something got it to work again.”

Their shop has parts on hand for those who would like to have a go at repairs. Qualified personnel are on site to assist with answering questions and to give advice. For those projects that go on too long or just get lost in translation, Phoenix Mechanical’s professional service team is happy to help.

Longtime residents of Taos know that Phoenix Mechanical has been assisting with the needs of Taos County residents and businesses for over 30 years. Whether you have been here 50 years or you just closed on the house yesterday, the team at Phoenix Mechanical looks forward to serving all of your mechanical needs for many years to come.

Everybody on the Phoenix Mechanical team would like to express gratitude to the community of Taos and the surrounding areas for the ongoing support. As Sturges says “we feel that we have a responsibility to our clients to provide the best service possible”.
