Security system helps foil attempted burglary in Whitemarsh
WHITEMARSH » A pair of would-be burglars got more than they bargained for when an alert caretaker thwarted their plot to break into the house of a vacationing resident.
Levoy Boston, 38, and Kathryn Angelo, 25, both of the 400 block of Dupont Street in Philadelphia, are facing attempted burglary and narcotics charges after being apprehended by police outside a home in the 300 block of Skippack Pike on Jan. 18.
Around 2 a.m. police received a call regarding suspicious activity at the scene. The caller was not at the location but told a dispatcher he was monitoring the property through a remote surveillance system and saw a woman who appeared to be looking around for keys and trying to open doors in back of the house.
The surveillance system was also equipped with a microphone, which allowed the caller to determine that the woman was talking to a man, and they were plotting to burglarize the home.
The caller told police he thought the woman was a former employee of the homeowner who was fired because of heroin use.
When approached by police, Angelo reportedly confirmed that she used to work for the resident and said she was just dropping by to say hello.
While an officer was getting her information, another responding officer discovered a man, later identified as Boston, hiding behind a detached garage.
A cut off straw and a packet of suspected heroin were reportedly found near where Boston was hiding.
Both suspects were taken into custody, and after police viewed packages of suspected heroin in plain sight on the driver’s seat of a burgundy Acura parked in the driveway, officers secured a search warrant for their suspected vehicle.
Police searched Boston and found a packet of suspected heroin in one of his pockets, $755 in cash in various denominations — mostly under $20, a knife, black gloves, a head-worn flashlight and 38 Xanax pills. After he was taken into custody, one packet of suspected heroin was reportedly recovered from the seat of the patrol vehicle he was transported in, and another was recovered from his holding cell.
These discoveries prompted a second search in which 89 additional packets of suspected heroin were reportedly found stashed in Boston’s underwear.
After being read her Miranda rights, police say Angelo admitted that she and Boston went to the house with the intention of stealing money.
They were both arraigned in District Court and remanded to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility after each of them failed to post $25,000 bail. Their preliminary hearings are scheduled for Feb. 1.
The Acura was impounded after police made several unsuccessful attempts to contact its registered owner.
