Barbara N. Smith

Barbara N. (Fichter) Smith, 81, passed away quietly on February 7th, 2019 in Hospice Care at The Memory Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

She was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania, February 2, 1938, the daughter of Ella Naomi and John Joseph Fichter.

She is survived by her husband Richard Rowell Smith of Virginia Beach, Virginia, her son Karl Richard Smith of Wilmington, Delaware, daughter Kathryn Patricia Tandy and son in law Thomas King Tandy III of Chesapeake, Virginia. She was Granna to five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Barbara attended Business School after graduating from High School and worked first as assistant to the Human Relations Manager at General Electric Company in Philadelphia where she met her husband.

When children arrived Barbara’s life was devoted solely to her children and she did not return to work until they were of high school age. At that time she took a position as Secretary to the Manager of Research at McNeil Consumer Products in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania. In 1994 Barbara took early retirement and with her husband moved to Jupiter, Florida.

She enjoyed years of playing tennis with her friends and enjoying a care free life when in 2011 she was diagnosed with moderate dementia and eventually Alzheimer’s.

She and her husband moved to Virginia Beach to be close to their daughter who would help with her care.

Memorial services will be announced at a later date and will be held in Norristown, Pennsylvania.
