Pottstown Historical Society January Meeting

Monday, Jan 20 at 7:00 pm., 568 High St., Pottstown, Pa. The Society’s speaker for January will be our President and local historian, David R. Kerns. He will give a presentati­on on local resident, Hugh J. High, who rode a bicycle from Pottstown to Seward, Nebraska in 1885. This is his story as told through a daily diary he kept as he traversed 2,665 miles, experienci­ng all kinds of road and weather conditions. Dave has hopefully piqued everyone’s interest with a brief account of his travels in this newsletter. Now you’re all invited to hear the rest of the story. Please join us at the Society

‘To the Soul of a Poet: the Romance of the 20th century’

Friday, Jan. 24. The Church of the Holy Spirit will hold a concert, “To the Soul of a Poet: the Romance of the 20th century,” by Brian Chu, Baritone soloist, accompanie­d by Seth Trumbore on piano, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24 at the church at 2871 Barndt Road at the corner of Sumneytown Pike, Upper Salford. Chu has performed as a soloist in opera, choral and orchestral performanc­es throughout the country. He did graduate studies in voice/opera at the Peabody Conservato­ry of Music and has been an adjunct professor of voice at Muhlenberg College since 2005. Cross-Country Ski Clinic at Norristown Farm Park

On January 26 at 10 a.m. This program is a “go” even without snow! On January 26 at 10 a.m., learn about ski technique, equipment, waxing, clubs you can join, and places you can ski. On snow, instructio­n is available if conditions permit. Bring your skis and learn to glide longer and stronger. Meet in the Salt Wing. All ages are welcome to attend this free recreation­al program. Valentine Workshop for Kids:

Saturday, Feb. 8. Spend a Saturday morning making creative Valentines for someone special on Saturday, February 8 from 10 a.m. to noon in our classroom. Kids ages five and older, accompanie­d by an adult, are welcome to attend this fun workshop where we’ll make four fun crafts – a unique vintageins­pired paper teacup, a decorative Valentine hanging made of hearts and lace doilies, a 3-D card that pops out when you open it, and a wooden picture frame with a special handprint and poem. Refreshmen­ts and games will be provided. There is a $5 fee for children and adults are free. The preregistr­ation deadline is Friday, January 31.
