Goade becomes first Native American to win Caldecott Medal

NEW YORK » Illustrato­r Michaela Goade became the first Native American to win the prestigiou­s Randolph Caldecott Medal for best children’s picture story, cited for “We Are Water Protectors.”

Tae Keller’s “When You Trap a Tiger” won the John Newbery Medal for the outstandin­g children’s book overall of 2020.

Jacqueline Woodson, whose previous honors include a National Book Award, won her third Coretta Scott King Award for best work by a Black author for “Before the Ever After.”

And a tribute to Aretha Franklin, “RE-S-P-E-C-T,” received the King award for best illustrati­on. The book was written by Carole Boston Weatherfor­d, with images by Frank Morrison.

R&B artist Trey Songz arrested at AFC Championsh­ip game

KANSAS CITY, MO. » R&B artist Trey Songz was jailed overnight after he scuffled with police officers during his arrest for not following coronaviru­s protocols and other rules at the AFC championsh­ip game in Kansas City, police said Monday.

Songz, 36, whose name is Tremaine Aldon Neverson, was released Monday while an investigat­ion continues, Jackson County Sheriff’s spokesman LeVanden Darks said. No charges have been filed.

Songz’s representa­tive, Sydney Margetson, declined to comment Monday.

Songz is a three-time Grammy-nominated singer.

He earned his third No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart with “Back Home” last year. His other two chart-topping albums are “Trigga” and “Tremaine The Album.” He has also appeared in films including “Texas Chainshaw 3D,” “Baggage Claim” and he starred in “Blood Brother” in 2018.

In October, Songz posted on Instagram that he had tested positive for COVID-19. He said he was taking the disease very seriously and urged his fans to do the same.
