Film, stage star Ariana DeBose to host the Tony Awards

NEW YORK » New Academy Award winner and Tony Award nominee Ariana DeBose will host this year’s Tony Awards.

The “West Side Story” star will lead the presentati­on June 12 at New York City’s famed Radio City Music Hall live on CBS and on Paramount+ starting at 8 p.m. An hour-long pre-show will stream on Paramount+.

“After the challengin­g last two years, there is no one better to bring the theater community together on this important night honoring the best of Broadway and share the joys of live performing once again than this extraordin­arily talented artist,” said Jack Sussman, executive vice president of specials, music, live events and alternativ­e programmin­g at CBS.

DeBose is a theater veteran, with roles in “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical,” “Hamilton,” “A Bronx Tale,” “Pippin,” “Motown the Musical,” “Bring It On: The Musical” and “Company.”

Maroon 5, Usher to headline concert to honor John Lewis

LOS ANGELES » Maroon 5 and Usher will headline a benefit concert in Atlanta to honor the legacy of the late U.S. Rep. John Lewis.

The Grammy Award-winning pop band and singer will perform during the Beloved Benefit at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium on July 7, concert officials announced Thursday. The event was reschedule­d from its initial date in February due to COVID-19 concerns.

NBC Sports host and correspond­ent Maria Taylor will serve as the event’s emcee.

Along with Usher and Maroon 5’s performanc­es, the benefit concert will feature a program filled with inspiring community stories. The money raised will be distribute­d to several nonprofit beneficiar­ies that prioritize economic and community developmen­t.
