KU partners with scholarship program

Kutztown University has announced a partnership with Folds of Honor, an organization that provides scholarships to the spouses and children of fallen or disabled military members and first responders.

As part of the partnership, KU is matching up to $2,000 for scholarships that Folds of Honor provides to Kutztown students. For the fall 2023 semester the college will support up to five students, with the intention of expanding that effort in the future.

The idea for the partnership came from KU alumni Jim Zellner, a supporter of the university and the organization.

“He realized both organizations emphasize the importance of higher education and recognized that together we could provide greater opportunities to students,” said Dr. Kenneth S. Hawkinson, KU president. “This partnership enables Kutztown University to close the gap between scholarship awards and the cost of tuition.”

Kurtis Ravenel Jr., who is part of KU’s Class of 2023, said Folds of Honor has been a great help to him, and the organization will be able to provide even more support to students like him now that they’re partnering with the university.

“Folds of Honor means a lot to me and my family,” he said. “I’ve been a scholarship recipient all four of my years of my undergraduate career here at Kutztown. It’s taken a big load off of our shoulders.

“I love what Folds of Honor represents — giving back to veterans who have risked their lives for our country. I just want to say thank you. I’m proud to be part of this, and I’m glad this partnership will bring these resources to more KU students.”

Lt. Col. Dan Rooney, CEO and founder of Folds of Honor, likewise said the partnership will help his organization expand its reach.

“Folds of Honor is grateful to Kutztown University for its generous commitment and excited to team up on this program,” he said. “We think this partnership can be a force multiplier to our mission and also gain additional awareness for Folds of Honor and our deserving recipients.”
