Eagles sign Suh to help defensive line
PHILADELPHIA >> The Eagles added another golden oldie to the defensive line mix as they signed Ndamukong Suh to a one-year contract.
If you’re keeping score, the defensive line room now will accommodate Suh (35), Linval Joseph
(34), Brandon Graham (34), Robert Quinn (32) and Fletcher Cox (32 next month). May we suggest The Big 98.1 oldies station while they wait for defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, 39, to begin the meetings? A little “Earth Angel,” perhaps?
Suh (6-4, 313) had 6.0 sacks last year in 17 games, all starts, for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who this season are paying the price for low-balling him. While the veteran of 12 seasons technically played left defensive end in a three-man front for the Bucs, he did some damage rushing inside in pass rushing situations.
The Eagles always have said you cannot have enough pass rushers. Now they’ll have to amend it to old pass rushers.
Suh had other suitors but wanted to come to the Eagles, per reports. He’s missed just three games in his career (due to a suspension) while starting the other 191.
In the past three weeks, the Eagles traded for Quinn and signed Joseph and Suh.
Suh has a history of violent
play dating to early in his career. He was ejected and suspended two games for stomping on the right arm of Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Evan DietrichSmith on Thanksgiving in 2011.
The following Thanksgiving, Suh was penalized and fined for kicking Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub.
And of course during the 2014 season, Suh famously stepped on the leg of Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, drawing a onegame suspension.
Suh was the No. 2 overall pick by Detroit in the 2010 draft. He has 701/2 sacks and was selected to five Pro Bowls.
The Eagles (8-1) are shoring up their run defense after giving up 152 yards on the ground to the Washington Commanders in their first loss of the season on Monday. They have the 20th-ranked rush defense and are 25th in yards per carry allowed at 4.7.
