CB West grad Burke on target at Villanova

Women’s basketball

Maddie Burke (CB West) had her best game of the season with Villanova in Thursday’s 71-46 win over Penn, scoring 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from 3-point range with three rebounds, two assists and a block. Lucy Olsen (Spring-Ford) had nine points, five rebounds, five assists, a block and steal, Kaitlyn Orihel (Archbishop Wood) had four points , three rebounds and two assists. Brooke Mullin (Neshaminy) had five rebounds, an assist, two steals and played strong defense.

In Sunday’s 74-71 comeback win at Temple, Olsen had six points, four boards and six assists with Burke adding three points and two assists and Orihel tabbing a point and two boards. Mullin

totaled seven points, four rebounds, eight helpers, two blocks and a steal.

• Kaitlyn Flanagan (Plymouth Whitemarsh) chipped in four points, three rebounds, four assists and two steals as Holy Cross topped Connecticu­t College 65-49 on Sunday. Flanagan dropped in 12 on 4-of-5 shooting with five rebounds and four assists in Wednesday’s 56-49 win over New Hampshire.

• Anna McTamney (Plymouth Whitemarsh) piled up 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting with three rebounds and three assists as West Chester picked up its first win Sunday, downing Chestnut Hill 57-53.

• Lauren Fortescue (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had a productive week in limited minutes for

Christophe­r Newport. In Saturday’s 120-23 win over Goucher College, Fortescue played just 15 minutes but managed to put in 14 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals. On Wednesday, Fortescue scored nine points with three rebounds and an assist in just seven minutes in an 86-36 win over Mary Baldwin.

• Miranda Liebtag (Abington) had 12 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and two steals and Emma Pyne (Pennridge) had two points and two assists for Cabrini in Saturday’s 67-59 loss to Misericord­ia. In Tuesday’s 64-46 win over Eastern, Liebtag had 15 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals. Pyne added four points and Kai Williams (Cheltenham) scored four points with three rebounds.

• Grace O’Neill (Archbishop Carroll) had seven points, four rebounds and an assist as Drexel topped Maryland Eastern Shore 6661 on Saturday. Lainey Allen (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had four points, six rebounds, a block and steal for UMES.

• Mikaela Reese (Souderton) had 13 points, eight rebounds, two assists, three blocks and five steals to pace DeSales in a 58-49 win over Muhlenberg on Wednesday. Megan Bealer (Souderton) added seven points, eight boards, five assists and five steals and Olivia Scotti (Neshaminy) had four points and three rebounds.

• Haley Crossley (William Tennent) had 15 points and six rebounds for Gwynedd Mercy in Tuesday’s 7647 win over Arcadia. Elise Sylvester (PJP II) had eight points, seven rebounds and six assists, Kelly Owens (Perk Valley) had 12 points and three rebounds and Cayla Sharkey (North Penn) scored five points with nine rebounds, two blocks and three steals.

Men’s basketball

• Eric Dixon (Abington) powered Villanova in Friday’s 73-71 loss at Michigan State, scoring 24 points on 9-of-14 field goals with nine rebounds, three assists and a steal. Jordan Longino (Germantown Academy) added five points, three rebounds and two assists and Chris Arcidiacon­o (Neshaminy) had six points and four assists. Dixon also had 17 points on Monday as ‘Nova topped Delaware State 60-50, adding seven rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals while Longino had seven points and four rebounds.

• Jeff Woodward (Methacton) had six points and six rebounds for Colgate in Friday’s 85-80 loss to Duquesne. Woodward tallied six rebounds and seven assists in Tuesday’s 80-68 win over Syracuse.

• Sean Yoder (Pennridge) had seven points, three rebounds and an assist off the bench Sunday as Navy topped Youngstown State 80-67. In Friday’s 78-69 win over UC San Diego, Yoder tallied nine points, seven rebounds and an assist as a starter. Navy started the week with a 75-68 loss to Coppin State with Yoder tallying six points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.

• Drew Stover (Upper Dublin) had a career best game for Millersvil­le in Saturday’s 79-71 loss to Chestnut Hill. The sophomore scored 21 points on 10-of13 shooting, adding five rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal in just 21 minutes off the bench. Stover added eight points, three rebounds and a block in Wednesday’s 108-46 win over PSU Schuylkill.

• Erik Timko (Methacton) scored 23 points with six rebounds, seven assists and a steal as Jefferson defeated Kutztown 91-88 on Wednesday.

Women’s soccer

• Alyson Cutter (CB South) scored the matchwinne­r in overtime as West Chester defeated Franklin Pierce 2-1 on Sunday, sending the Golden Rams to the Division II National Semifinals for the first time since 2006. Cutter’s goal was her seventh of the season. Kiley Kergides (Germantown Academy) assisted on the Rams’ equalizer in regulation, also playing the full 110 minutes with two shots on goal. Deanna Lebotesis (Neshaminy) also went the full 110 while Nicolette Harrison (Pennridge) played off the bench for West Chester.

Kergides made sure West Chester played on Sunday by scoring her third goal of the season on Friday in WCU’s second round 1-0 win over PSAC rival Kutztown. She and Lebotesis both played 90 minutes while Cutter started and Harrison came in as a reserve.

• Mac Pluck (Germantown Academy) tallied her eighth assist of the season on Duke’s lone goal in Friday’s 1-0 win over Texas in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The grad student’s corner kick in the 88th minute led to the winning goal with Pluck also added five shots, one on goal, in her starting effort. Pluck started in Sunday’s 2-0 win over South Carolina in the Round of 16, playing 84 minutes and posting three shots as Duke advanced to the quarterfin­als.

Men’s soccer

• Eddie Fortescue (Wissahicko­n) was named a United States Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n (USCAA) Division I Men’s Soccer All-American on Nov.

10. Fortescue, a junior, led USCAA Division I in goals (18), points (44), and shots on goal (53) and was second with eight assists. Manor concluded its season in the USCAA National Championsh­ip Tournament on Nov. 12.

• Josh Jones (North Penn) started and played the full 110 minutes as Louisville lost its NCAA Tournament opener to Western Michigan 2-1 in double OT. Jones played forward late in overtime, registerin­g two shots on goal. The sophomore finished the season having started all 18 matches and played all but 13 minutes, his 1627 minutes topping the team. Jones also had three goals and an assist.

NCAA football

• Shane Hartzell (Pennridge) made 12 tackles, including a sack for nine yards and two tackles for loss as Villanova topped Delaware 29-26 on Saturday. Garrett Zobel (La Salle) added two tackles. Liam Trainer (La Salle) had five tackles and two quarterbac­k hits for the Blue Hens. Justis Henley (North Penn) and Tommy Walsh (Archbishop Wood) made two tackles.

• Reece Udinksi (North Penn) completed 32-of-50 passes for 277 yards and two touchdowns as Richmond fell 37-26 to William & Mary on Saturday.

• Jay White (North Penn) took 14 carries for 143 yards and two touchdowns while Tahmir Barksdale (Archbishop Wood) rushed once for five yards and a touchdown, adding four catches for 54 yards as DelVal opened the Division III Playoffs with a 59-0 win over Gallaudet on Saturday.

Yusuf Aladinov (William Tennent) had one tackle for loss, a quarterbac­k hit and forced fumble on defense. Nick Chapman (HatboroHor­sham) made two tackles and Micah Bootman (Upper Dublin) had a stop. White was named First Team AllMAC on offense at running back while Barksdale was First Team at receiver and returner.

Aladinov and

Cole

Kitchen (Hatboro-Horsham) were First Team selections on defense at defensive end and defensive back while Chapman was a Second Team linebacker.

• Daryll Davis-McNeil (Abington) was named First Team All-PSAC East for Kutztown at running back after rushing 194 times for 1,013 yards and 13 touchdowns with 11 catches for 107 yards. Albert Glasgow (Archbishop Wood) was named First Team at center while Ryan Schernecke (Upper Moreland) was a Second Team pick at offensive line. Antuan Lloyd (Wissahicko­n) was selected Second Team at defensive back with 28 tackles and led KU with two intercepti­ons and three pass breakups.

• Tyler Tate (Norristown), a redshirt senior at Millersvil­le, was selected First Team All-PSAC East at defensive end.

• Abdul Carter (La Salle) made four tackles with a 13-yard sack and quarterbac­k hit for Penn State in Saturday’s 55-10 win over Rutgers.

Field hockey

• Kate Strickland (Christophe­r Dock) and Georgia Werkser ( Norristown ) both earned All-PSAC first team honors for the 2022 season. Strickland became the first Marauder on record to lead the PSAC in goals scored with 21 which also set the Millersvil­le alltime single season goals scored record.

She also tied the Millersvil­le total points record with 46. Werkiser earned her first All-PSAC honor for her outstandin­g play in the midfield. She has totaled two goals and ranks second on the team with six assists.

Werkiser is an integral part of Millersvil­le’s offense and defense and also serves as a team captain. In this week’s PSAC tournament the Marauders defeated Bloomsburg 4-1 in the quarterfin­als, Shippensbu­rg 2- 1 in the semifinals before falling 3-2 in overtime to East Stroudsbur­g. Millersvil­le’s overall record is 16-5 and awaits the NCAA selection show to see if they will advance to the national tournament.

Swimming

• Hatboro-Horsham grad Andy Thomas (Harleysvil­le) is off to a tremendous start during his senior season at

Bloomsburg University.

Thomas picked up the Pennsylvan­ia State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Swimmer of the Week honor after leading the Huskies to a 118-67 win over Clarion last Friday.

It is the second week in a row Thomas has earned the honor.

This time, Thomas had a pair of wins and recorded two PSAC Championsh­ip cuts.

The former Hatter won the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.62 seconds to record a personal best this season and a PSAC-qualifying mark.

He wasn’t finished. Thomas also made a PSAC cut in the 100 back with a 52.61 to take first place. The other win for the senior was as the anchor leg of a firstplace 200 medley relay.

Over the weekend, the Huskies headed to the Bucknell Invitation­al — host of the PIAA Championsh­ips, which Thomas excelled at for the Hatters — for a three-day tournament in Lewisburg. There, Thomas picked up three NCAA ‘B’ cuts for the Huskies while winning a pair of events and helping the 800 freestyle relay team to a school record. He had his first NCAA cut in the 50 free with a winning time of 20.00. He then led off the 800 free relay with a time of 1:37.04, an NCAA ‘B’ cut and the fastest time in the 200 free this season.

• North Penn grad Sean Faikish (Lansdale) had an impressive victory for Notre Dame in its season-opening win over Pittsburgh.

Faikish, a junior, won the 200 IM in 1:51.37.

He is coming off a sophomore season that saw him notch two Top-10 times in program history.

Faikish also has the fifthbest time in program history in the 200 breaststro­ke prelims (1:55.81) at the 2022 ACC Championsh­ips.

• La Salle grad Matt Szekely (Doylestown) won the 100 fly in 46.53 seconds for Boston College at its home invite.

The Eagles placed first out of five teams. They accumulate­d 942 points in total and a 325.5-point lead over UMass Amherst (616.5). The Bryant men’s team placed third with 499.5 points, followed by Providence College (437) and Holy Cross (279).

Szekely, a senior, and his BC teammates traveled to Boston University for the Terrier Invitation­al over the weekend.

• Upper Dublin grad Abbie Amdor (Dresher) is a major reason Penn State is off to a 4-1 start.

Amdor, a senior, is contributi­ng in both the freestyle and relays and currently holds the ninth fastest 50 free time (22.61), sixth fastest 100 free time (49.16), and seventh fastest 200 free time (1:47.12) in the program’s history.

Amdor was also part of the record-holding 400 medley relay (3:33.26) for the Nittany Lions.

Penn State traveled to the North Carolina State Invitation­al over the weekend.

• Mikayla Scardino (Arcadia / Fr. / Souderton, Pa.) swam to three personal best times and a record-breaking relay time at the Misericord­ia Cougar Splash Invitation­al. She finished second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.44, dropping .05 seconds for a new personal best time. She touched the wall first in the 100-yard freestyle (53.63) dropping 1.05 off of her previous personal best time. Scardino also placed 4th in 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:00.17, shedding 2.56 off of her previous best. She brought home the first place 400-yard medley relay squad beating Misericord­ia by almost a second. Finally, Scardino lead off the program record breaking 200-yard freestyle relay, earning third place and setting a new school record by .19 seconds. Her times in the 100-yard freestyle and 400-medley relay are a MAC best, while she ranks second in the 50-yard freestyle.

Men’s cross country

• Bloomsburg sophomore teammate Ryan Duff (Plymouth Whitemarsh) finished 68th overall with a time of 31:47.5 at the NCAA Atlantic Regional.

NWSL

• The Washington Spirit picked up the 2023 contract option for Maddie Elwell (Wissahicko­n) as well as extending a new contract to Marissa Sheva (Pennridge). Elwell was the team’s second round draft pick in 2021 out of Vanderbilt while Sheva, a Penn State product, was signed in June.
