Scholarship presented to student for teaching major
WISSAHICKON >> Gwynedd Mercy University awarded a senior in Wissahickon High School’s class of 2023 with a four-year, full-tuition scholarship in a ceremony Nov. 14 at the high school.
Nia Murray was recommended by the district to receive the scholarship and will attend GMercyU as an Early Education major and return to the Wissahickon School District as a K-4 teacher.
The scholarship, formally called the Wissahickon and Gwynedd Mercy University Opportunity Scholarship, is part of an initiative to meet the urgent need for more qualified teachers while also increasing diversity among Wissahickon’s teaching staff. Studies have shown that student success, attendance, and social-emotional growth significantly improve when teachers are representative of the student population.
The scholarship is funded in part by GMercyU and in part by an anonymous donor.
