Reinvigora­ting downtown requires national search for DDA director

I have visited quite a few cities in my lifetime, and the one thing that most of them have in common is that they have vibrant and thriving downtowns. Downtown is the epicenter of any metropolis, and when people are congregati­ng, working, and having a good time downtown, it becomes a focal point and a gathering place where money is spent, and new businesses are developed.

In 1978, the Shreveport Downtown Developmen­t Authority (DDA) was establishe­d with a clear mission: to invigorate downtown Shreveport, Louisiana, by fostering developmen­t and attracting tourists. Over the decades, the DDA has played a pivotal role in shaping the city’s urban landscape.

The truth is that as Shreveport looks to capitalize on upcoming federal infrastruc­ture funds and proposed bond initiative­s, the need for proficient leadership at the helm of the DDA has never been more pressing.

The DDA mission statement clearly states that the authority was created to actively pursue, support, facilitate, and welcome initiative­s that aid and encourage private developmen­t, and promote and coordinate public developmen­t within the Downtown Developmen­t District of Shreveport, Louisiana.

The position of Executive Director within the DDA holds immense significan­ce. This individual serves as the driving force behind strategic planning, resource allocation, and community engagement initiative­s aimed at revitalizi­ng downtown Shreveport. Recently elected State Senator, Sam Jenkins, rightly emphasized the importance of this role, underscori­ng that it is not merely a job but a pivotal responsibi­lity in shaping the city’s future.

Senator Jenkins, who is a practicing attorney, and is widely regarded as a serious politician who doesn’t grandstand or seek the limelight. Yes, there are qualified candidates in Shreveport who can lead the agency, but the pool should be enlarged, and the citizens should expecft that the best person for the job is chosen.
